January Update: FIELD OF DREAMS 2018!

Success! Rio Field of Dreams 2018

Thanks to our grassroots efforts, support of Measure P, leadership from Principal Ginter, and most of all SJUSD Facilities Director, Frank Camarda, who has worked with us to make sure Rio is seeing the facilities improvements it deserves Rio will finally be getting our all-weather track and field by the summer of 2018!

But our work isn’t done. The current plan has upgraded bathrooms but no bleachers. As we iron out what the district will be responsible for, the school has funds for, and what the Rio community can do to enhance the stadium it is understood that fundraising will be needed to give our student athletes the best facilities possible.

You have asked what you can do to be a resource for this goal and here it is: We will need a Rio Field of Dreams 2018 committee who will steer, tap resources, and fundraise for upgrades that would include a new scoreboard, sound system, bleachers and other identified needs toward the ultimate goal of hosting track meets, soccer games, lacrosse games, rugby games and football under Friday Night Lights.

Please respond to this email with Field of Dreams 2018 if you are interested in being on this committee.

If you haven’t been by Rio lately you should! The transformation continues with fences pushed back to reveal the new functional hardscape of our entry quad and leading to our school offices, a colorful mascot logo at the front of school and facing the interior quad, our shield logo embedded in a new large gym floor, refurbished baseball dugouts (and soon to be outfield wall with new logo), and upgraded breezeway between the gyms and the locker rooms continuing. (And the new drainage system effictively handling all the rain we’ve been getting!)
The PAC building is waiting on steel to finish framing the structure, we will still be getting new lockers, locker rooms, drought-tolerant landscaping, and new signage all to be complpeted this summer. We will even be getting new lighting for the pool area and new roofs on the small and large gyms with solar panels to make us more energy efficient. The band will also benefit from PAC money to outfit the building with equipement needed for its performance and academic needs.
Measure P money will be transforming the Rio campus in the coming years to a completely modern facility. Rumored plans to build a new school on the athletic fields have been set aside due to cost and wanting to more expediently improve our campus in the least disruptive way possible.
