What’s Going on at Rio This Summer?

Rio will still be recieving $2.2 million in improvements along with the $13.5 million Performing and Academic Center (PAC building), but due to delays at the state level the timeline has been extended. The work will be completed over two summers with all improvements completed by Fall of 2017. Here’s the new timeline:

Summer 2016:

  • The PAC building will now not break ground until July
  • The school will still be painted with a new HOME OF THE RAIDERS and mascot logo on the large gym
  • The lobby of the large gym will be painted and receive new flooring
  • The large gym floors will have sanded, recoated, restriped floors with new logo
  • The small gym floors will be recoated
  • PE hallway improved floors and lighting
  • New irrigation and sewer lines will be installed

Summer 2017:

  • New lockers
  • Refurbished boys and girls locker rooms
  • Small gym floor replaced and accoustical tiles added
  • New landscaping throughout front, Senior Lawn, around Admin building to Caffeteria
  • PAC building completed
  • New front entrance sign
  • Directional campus signage

The bottom line is it will look worse before it looks better, but any work being done at Rio is a sign of progress and proof that Good Things Are Happening at Rio!

Rio Field of Dreams Update
At the April 26 SJUSD board meeting results of a survey gauging support of a Bond on the November 2016 ballot was shared. The overall survey results indicated: San Juan Unified School District Classroom Repair/Student Safety Measure is definitely viable for November 2016. The board did not take a vote or take further action on approving a bond measure. It is not on the May 2016 Agenda.

There is a state schools facilities bond on the November ballot.

If SJUDS moves forward with their own bond and the bond receives a 55% majority approval, currently Rio is third in line by the district’s grading system behind El Camino (1) and Encina (2) for most dire facility improvement needs. The district Master Plan for Rio would be to rebuild the campus in a two-phase construction: new academic buildings on athletic fields, put athletic fields where old campus was.

Our plan to approach major donors to resurrect the Rio Field of Dreams to expedite improved athletic facilities with all-weather surfaces has been hampered by the possibility of a bond.

It also has stalled with the district refusal to put in writing agreement to match donations.

We do have the ability to accept large donation pledges through the American River Sports Association (ARSA) non-profit holding group created during the original Field of Dreams campaign.

However, the district would have to front the money being pledged over a 5-10 year payment system and at this time there is no money available from the district for this project.

The district has indicated if a bond is not passed this November, Rio would receive no more money after the $15.5 million in 2016/17 improvements.

We will continue to pursue expedited improvements to Rio athletic facilities. If you’d like to be a part of the effort please respond to this email with Field of Dreams.
