OneRio Update 2/10 Meeting and Action Items

THIS IS ONLY A CONCEPTUAL DESIGN. Changes still pending, but this is accurate for the areas that will see new landscaping and hardscape at Rio this SUMMER.

Rio will be getting $2.2 million in school improvements this Summer!

Thanks to the Performing Arts Center (PAC – quarter in the swear jar if you call it the band building) breaking ground this April (new date) and support from Frank Camarda at district Facilities, Rio will be undergoing some impressive changes this summer! Details are still being finalized but here’s what Rio’s spit-shine will look like:

  • School painted
  • New lockers to match Senior Hallway installed
  • Refurbished PE hallway and boys and girls locker rooms
  • Gym floor either recoated or sanded down for new floor
  • Sound panels added to small gym
  • Paint large gym lobby (new coat of green paint inside large gym already completed)
  • Large “Home of the Raiders” painted on outside of large gym facing fields
  • New front entrance sign to replace LED sign (new LED will be on PAC building)
  • New drought tolerant landscaping at front of school (Tony Van Rees bench/Rio Memorial Grove will be on hold until this is completed)
  • Senior Lawn to be replaced with redesigned hardscape/landscape with raised seating and planters
  • New (possibly stamped and stained) concrete from front entrance and drop-off area to Administration building (Senior Lawn area) and in between Admin office and small gym, to caffeteria.
  • Sewer and water needs addressed in reworked landscape areas

Field of Dreams Update:
We have decided to proceed with securing a donor/grants/eligible funding group to help Rio get a new all-weather track and field in an expedited time frame despite the district looking to put a bond on the November ballot that would address implementing Rio’s updated Master Plan. It does make it more challenging to attract a donor/grants for expedited updated athletic facilites if a SJUSD bond goes to ballot, but the district still has many significant hurdles to overcome for the promise of Rio’s updated Master Plan to be implemented in a timely manner, so we will continue to stay the course in getting our athletic fields updated by 2017 through a private donor/district partnership. Please come to the next RAAB meeting (Monday, March 7, 7pm in Library) for more information or to become part of the team trying to make this happen.
