Rio Americano Makes the News for Good Deeds!

It was a Christmas miracle! Though OneRio made $1000 with its inaugural Rio Wreaths fundraiser, we fell short of our goal to have 50 wreaths donated for every door of the elderly residents at Sunrise Assisted Living in Carmichael.

Enter Rio Resource Wendy Finnecy and Special Education teachers Heather Ludwig and Jenie Sawyer-Carter. In the 11th hour before the scheduled donation last Friday, December 4, Wendy, Heather, and Jenie coordinated with OneRio Spirit Leader, Kelli Wheeler, to have a wreath making party to come up with the additional 40 wreaths so every senior would have one on their door!

Throughout the day and at lunch Thursday Special Ed students joined with other Rio students to create wreaths made from pine boughs collected the night before from Mikey’s Christmas Trees and decorations from the dollar store.

A press release was sent out to try to get some publicity for positive things happening at Rio. Both Fox40 and KCRA showed up to film our Special Ed students delivering the homemade wreaths to the residents of Sunrise of Carmichael. After school many more students showed up to deliver the rest of the wreaths and interact with the senior residents of the care facility.

This wonderful coming together of our Rio community for holiday outreach to our elderly community was just another reason why #WeChooseRio!

ACTION ITEM: We need 200 store-bought, nut-free holiday cookies and cupcakes for this Friday’s (12/11) Friday Festival. Please deliver to Rm C10 Thursday or Friday and reply to this email how many you are donating.
Tony Van Rees Bench/Memorial Grove

It was shocking to learn of the sudden passing of Rio community friend, alumnus, and generous Rio supporter, Tony Van Rees of Fat Cat Scones.

To commemorate Tony, Rio PTSA would like to have a bench in his honor placed next to the bench out front of school under the trees. OneRio has a vision of making this area the Rio Americano Memorial Grove. We would dedicate the bench already there to former Rio French teacher, Alec Hodgins, who died last year. Bricks commemorting those we lost from our Rio community would be placed around the benches.

American River Water Polo has already pledged $125 toward a memorial bench for Tony. If you would like to help with this or the effort to create a RA Memorial Grove please contact Kelli Wheeler @onerioamericano@gmail.com

Smarties for Finals

OneRio is creating a new tradition of handing out Smarties candy to our Rio smarties during Finals week!

Thank you to Rio Student Government for facilitating this fun, new, spirit event by handing out Smarties at lunch on Tuesday, December 15. We will do this again for Finals at the end of the year.

Thanks to donations from the McClure, Steele, and Maximus and Morgan Davis families OneRio was able to help Andreas Pantis from Boy Scout Troop 328 with his Eagle Scout Project benefitting Rio Americano students. The wooden picnic tables (with their acknowledment plaques) built by Pantis and his troop have been a welcome addition to the main quad providing more seating at lunch.
Thanks to donations from the Anderson, Pantis, Armstrong, Kotal, Harris, and Mahoney (Sutter Builders) families OneRio was able to start a new tradition with Rio Student Government. Four metal benches were donated to be decorated by each grade and placed around campus for more seating and visual appeal. Make sure to stop by campus after Christmas break to see these fantasticly decorated and dedicated benches spread around campus for the Classes of 2016, ’17, ’18, and ’19 with more to come next year!
